A Study on ECG, Cardiac Function, and Cardiac Reserve Capacity during Graded Maximal Exercise in College Females

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine ECG, cardiac function, and cardiac reserve capacity during graded maximal exercise which can be the indicators of the possibility to develop cardiac diseases.
Healthy college-female volunteers (N=34, 23.2yrs) participated in the study. Following the measures of electrocardiogram(ECG) and blood pressure at rest, subjects performed a graded maximal exercise test on bicycle ergometer. Subjects exercised
at
35watts for first 2min, and the resistance was increased by 10watts every 2 minute until exhaustion. During the test, the following variables were measured every 2 min: HR, SV. SBP, DBP, ST-levels. The product of heart rate and systolic blood
pressure,
termed the "Double product" was calculated, the maximal O2 intake(VO2 max) was estimated based on the workrate and heart rate. The changes in ECG, cardiac function and aerobic fitness from rest to maximal exercise as follows:
1. Every subject's ECG and blood pressure at rest appeared to be in a normal range.
2. There were about 12.3% increase in HR and 25.4% increase in SV during exercise compared to the resting state. Also, the CO during exercise was 2.8 times as much as the CO at rest. The SBP and DBP was increased from 120/75mmHg to 182/126mmHg
and
double product(DP) was increased about 210% from 93.03 to 288.81mmHg* beasts/min.
3. It appeared that the maximal mean value for VO2, workrate and METs were 32,95¡¾4.62ml/kg. min, 118.03¡¾5.85watts, 9.38¡¾1.32MET respectively.
4. The mean time value of ST-segment displacement was 19.38min and mean workrate value of ST-segment displacement was 85.6watts in lead II, V2, V5. It was assumed that subjects were capable of exercising without without cardiovascular distress up
to the
work intesity of 85.6 watts in average.
Fuethermore, it was recommednded to consider individual's cardiovascular capability as upon the exercise training since the METs, exercise capacity and max VO2 of subjects in the present study appeared to be lower than reference mean values which
was
cinsidered to result from the low cardiac reserve capacity. This symptom, resulting from retardation of functional growth cooperated with teen's period of development and growth completion required the endurance and aerobic exercise training and
especially during the period of aging between primary and declining age, the necessity of the exercise for the completed health of each individual is strongly advised.
